How to take care of your skin before your photoshoot, filming or other visibility events

January 12, 2021

Before having your pictures taken professionally, taking care of your skin in advance can certainly boost your confidence on the day of the brand photoshoot and result in beautiful portrait images of you.

It might be true that make up can hide some little imperfections, however as it is well known, "the makeup you put on your face only looks as good as the canvas underneath it.”

In other words, if you want to look naturally beautiful and glowing in front of the camera, taking care of your skin a few weeks before your photoshoot will help you to achieve this.

How to take care of your skin before  your photoshoot, filming or other visibility events?

Recently, I met Sakina “The Facial Cupping Expert” during our filming project. Together we filmed two online courses for individuals and beauty therapist professionals on how to take care of the skin by using the Facial Cupping.

UK Sussex Brighton and Hove Professional Female Personal Brand Portrait Photographer and Videographer

Hi, I’m Sakina

The founder of “The Facial Cupping Expert”, practicing acupuncture for the past 10 years, both in the UK and in the US.

Would you like to see visible results without the need for cosmetic procedures?

I was not only impressed by Sakina’s knowledge about skin care but I was impressed with her radiant skin on the day of shooting.

I have decided to interview Sakina and share with you the top tips on how to take care of your skin before your photo/video shoot:

Two weeks before your shoot:

1.Exfoliate your face and body gently twice a week with a natural scrub.

Exfoliating your skin will help clean out your pores, get rid of dead skin cells and protect the outer layer of your skin. I actually like to make my own scrubs with coffee grounds and coconut sugar and oil. You might be tempted to do yours do. It's very easy and smells heavenly.

2. Avoid professional treatments that might be too strong or too harsh on your skin.

You might be tempted to get a professional facial treatments during this period. However try to avoid any treatment that is too harsh or too strong that might stimulate your skin to break out or even create an allergic reaction.

3. Only use a micellar lotion in the morning to clean your face

You don't need to clean your face too often, especially in the morning even though you thoroughly cleaned it the previous night.

Cleaning the face too often can harm the skin barrier that can make the skin more prone to rashes and other skin problem. It can also lead to more dryness.

Simply use a micellar lotion before applying a natural moisturiser (with an SPF preferably)

4. Perform two to three facial cupping sessions a week.

Facial Cupping will help to reduce the size of your pore, boost collagen production and blood circulation, and will regulate your skin oil production.

5. Drink at least 1.5 litters of water a day.

Drinking water will help to maintain your skin hydrated more than any cream can do.

I like to start and finish my day with a cup of hot water with lemon to help flush the toxins away.

3-4 days before your shoot:

3 to 4 days before your shoot, continue your skin care routine as mentioned above.

Don't panic and you don’t have to get a last-minute facial you've never done before. You never know how your skin will react to a new treatment. Keep to your routine.

  • If you feel like it, it's also the perfect time to have your eyebrows and/or your body waxed.

  • You should also try to avoid any excess caffeine or alcohol intake as it could make your skin dryer.

  • Go to bed early, and get plenty of fresh air. The more rest you'll have before the photoshoot, the more radiant you will look.

The night before your shoot:

  • Go to bed early. Try to get at least 8h of uninterrupted sleep.

  • Drink a cup of hot water with lemon before bed. Avoid any alcohol, cigarette, telephone screens.

The day of your photoshoot:

After a restful night a two weeks of a healthy lifestyle and good skin care routine, you should wake up looking fresh and your skin looking radiant.

  • Make sure you freshen up your face with a micellar lotion and a natural toner. Simply apply your daily moisturiser.

Your skin is now ready to be embellished with touches of make up.

Happy Shooting, Sakina & Magdalena!
