How the idea of "Paint with me" Brighton art workshop was born

I’ve been told that “to paint, you have to be an artist,” but I never went to an art school. Yet, I wanted to create, express myself, experiment on a large canvas. I don’t know why? It just called to me.  

But I didn’t know where to start. Do I even know how to paint?

I was afraid I wouldn’t be good enough. I can’t draw very well?

I spent years browsing art shops and buying supplies but never using them. How do I even start? 

I wasted time on things that didn’t fill me with joy instead of making space for creativity. 

When I look back, I realise there were three obstacles holding me back to paint:

1. Lack of space - Where would I put these canvases and art materials and what if I spill paint everywhere?

2. Lack of tools - What should I buy and how do I use it?

3. Lack of inspiration and support - Who can I ask for advice? How do I know if I’m doing it correctly?

And that’s how the idea of Paint With Me was born: adult beginners friendly abstract art painting workshops, classes and courses in Brighton, Sussex UK.

I understand that it can be hard to make time for creativity that’s why I’ve hired a beautiful professional Lawrence art studio in Brighton and Hove. I’ve got the large canvases and paints ready to go. That means obstacle number 1 and 2 are solved.

Now for obstacle number 3! I’m going to show you how an intuitive abstract painting brought a tremendous amount of joy into my life. It helped me understand myself better - my feelings and emotions. It melted away my stress and gave me a new lease on life.

But don’t get me wrong! This isn’t an typical Brighton art class or paint by numbers painting art workshop.

I’m not your teacher.

I’m here to create a safe space for you to experiment, express and find your inner artist within you. I want to share that painting journey with you and have some fun along the way. As well for you to experience how transformative and healing the painting process can be!

My own journey as brighton based abstract artist has been interesting . . .

As a teenager, I dreamt of being an artist.

I wanted to create and express who I was through painting, design, photography and dancing. I wanted to work with colours and shapes. Instead, I was encouraged to pursue a more conventional path and went on studying accounting.

It took me a long time to discover, or rather re-discover, my passion.

I didn’t choose this purposeful path until I was in my early thirties.

I spent the last ten years of my life working in the corporate world before following my true calling. I spent years browsing art shops, buying new art supplies but actually never using them. I spent years focusing on a corporate career and things that didn’t fill me with joy instead of making space for creativity. This was frustrating and affected my self-esteem.

Now, I feel incredibly lucky because I get to do things that makes me excited to wake up in the morning!

I started out trying to create something beautiful that others would like. I wondered what would sell and whether I could make a living from it. But I quickly realised that way of thinking stifles the creative process. It sucks the joy out of painting.

Now I paint in order to express my emotions, to feel alive in the moment, and to connect with a deeper part of myself. I push myself let go of the inner critic. I practice surrendering to the creative process. 

It’s a liberating journey.

I am on a mission to share this transformative creative journey with as many of you as possible

I am running regular intuitive abstract painting workshops in Brighton & Hove and around Sussex area: art journaling, introduction to abstract painting and my signature workshop called “Paint your own large abstract” one day art course in my own art studio or Lawrence Art studio in Hove (only 1 hour from London).
